Nurse Student Rural Placement Project

Tamworth2

Three nursing students from Sydney’s Torrens University have become the first to take part in the Nurse Student Rural Placement (NSRP) Project in NSW, a partnership delivered by Rural Doctor Network (RDN) and the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA).

The project empowers students to explore rural primary health care careers, offering small ratio learning under Registered Nurses and/or Nurse Practitioners supervision. Diverse placements cover General Practice, aged care, and community health.

Collaborating with universities, NSRP spans over 60 rural NSW sites, inviting rural nurses to mentor future healthcare professionals.

Nurse Student Rural Placement Project

Three nursing students from Sydney’s Torrens University have become the first to take part in the Nurse Student Rural Placement (NSRP) Project in NSW, a partnership delivered by Rural Doctor Network (RDN) and the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA).

The students were placed in two General Practices within Tamworth, working under the supervision of experienced Practice Nurses, with a further eleven students set to undergo their placements in Coffs Harbour, Mittagong, Bowral, Bega, Condobolin, and Tamworth from this August.

The project focuses on providing a high-quality placement experience, supporting nursing students to positively discover and assess the possibilities of a rural primary health care nursing career. The project empowers students to explore rural primary health care careers, offering small ratio learning under Registered and/or Nurse Practitioners supervision. Diverse placements cover General Practice, Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Services, residential aged-care facilities, community health, school health services and more.

The NSRP Project collaborates with multiple Australian universities and education providers, supporting placements for students studying a Bachelor of Nursing and Diploma of Nursing across their first, second, and third years. Additionally, the project supports Post-Graduate and Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner). Diverse placements cover General Practice, Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Services, residential aged-care facilities, community health, school health services and more.

Currently there are more than 60 primary health care sites across rural NSW that are taking part in this project.

If you are a Registered Nurse and/or Nurse Practitioner who works in a rural primary health care setting, the NSRP project provides you with an opportunity to mentor and share your professional experience to the next generation of primary health care nurses.
