No Regrets Moving Rural

Dave Scriven Serena Kirby

Physiotherapist David Scriven moved to the Great Southern region of Western Australia more than ten years ago, with no intention of staying permanently.

Thanks to continued support from Rural Health West and his drive to improve healthcare services in the region, David is here to stay.

“We have the greatest life down here,” David said at the most recent Health Professionals Network (HPN) event held for the Great Southern region.

David now owns his own allied health centre in the coastal town of Denmark, which is set to expand after receiving a grant from the state government to develop his facility.

No Regrets Moving Rural

However rewarding a career in rural health is, it is not without its challenges. Rural Health West’s Health Professional Networks were established to tackle some of these challenges, particularly around upskilling and collaboration between colleagues.

Having recently attended the Great Southern HPN Welcome to 2024 event, David speaks of the continued support he has received from Rural Health West.

“I originally moved to the region with relocation support from Rural Health West. I've received professional development support along the way, and their most recent assistance helped us secure a development grant to start our new build, which will improve healthcare services and supply in the Great Southern.”

David and his team at Ocean Beach Physiotherapy in Denmark received a grant from the Western Australian Government’s Regional Economic Development (RED) Grants program, to develop their facility and help create skilled employment opportunities.

The HPN Welcome to 2024 events were held across all of WA’s seven regions, giving health professionals across the state the chance to start the year with a fun-filled networking opportunity in a casual setting, before a range of enriching professional development opportunities are rolled out by the Network coordinators.

The Great Southern HPN Welcome to 2024 event drew 120 attendees from a wide range of health professions.
